We are happy to announce that Moonpod is sponsoring TMDC9; the ninth annual text mode demo competition.

TMDC is a pseudo-annual demo-coding contest held over the internet and this year's event will be held from 11.11.06 to 12.12.06.

More information is available at the TMDC website.

rather unfortunately, I can't find a clear description of exactly what the contest is. What is a "text mode demo"?

You are quite right - they could do with a clearer explanation. They shouldn't just leave it to the rules and explanation pages. I wonder if they've been at it so long they just expect people to know what text mode is?

Best explanations can be found on wikipedia:

demo: Computer graphics generated procedurally and rendered in realtime.
textmode: The mode of your computer where there is only lines of text.

Thus a textmode demo is a program that uses the backround colors of textmode to create simple raster graphics which can be animated to create cool effects.

Its not that hard to understand especaly with all the the talk about the demoscene and procedurally generated content.
