I just watched this movie Vexille. And well, I can't say it doesn't remind me of another CGI anime movie.
I'm talking about Appleseed 2: Ex Machina. Produced by none other than John Woo.
I'm not kidding. Doves are a plot device and everything.
Back on topic these movies have more than a cosmetic similarity.
Same art style
Same Badass female mecha pilot protagonist
Same Music by Paul Oakenfold*
Same Final Level
Same DEEP speech about humanity at the end
And same EBUIL CORPERATIONS WANT TO TUN US INTA ROBITZ! plot
To be fair this movie also rips off dune.
Yes, Thats a sandworm.
Overall I think Appleseed is the better movie. Even if It butchers the Manga even worse than the first movie did. (Briareos is supposed to be BLACK foo!) At least its evil robot conspiracy was funny Spoiler (highlight to read): iPods turn you into zombies |
Also Appleseed had costume designs by Prada. Vexille didn't.
Again I'm not kidding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appleseed_Ex_Machina#Costume_design
Personally I wounder when we will get over the EBIL CORPRITE ROBITS and ANGSTY EMOTONLESS CYBORGZ that fill movies these days.
I personally want to see a movie in which the last human went extinct a million years ago and the galaxy is populated by clones, robots, and AIs containing the uploaded minds of last humans.
Or a movie in which a high tech combat robot escapes and the only thing that can stop it is, another high tech combat robot.
Heck The Matrix probably wouldn't have sucked if it turned out that "the machines" were really people and "the humans" were just NPCs in a giant Video game.
I think that the portrayal of robots in movies is about on the level of Blackface comedy. with the matrix being the equivalent to Birth of a Nation. Eventually we might reach the equivalent of blacksploitation cinema but until then, I humbly await our new robot overlords.
*They even used the same song "Burns attack" in the chase scene. |

Even some of Asmov's stories have the same mindset.
Robots in fiction are presented the same way minorities were 60 years ago. Eeither subservient supporting characters or villains.
I do see some hope. The anime Yukikaze had a sentient fighter jet that communicates only via text prompt be the most human character in the show, And Iron man is a nice story about a man fusing with his creation and tuning himself into something more.
How about this for a movie.
In the year 20XX the worlds most advance fighter jet is unmanned, Can fly for two years straight with a micro fusion reactor, Wields a laser that can shoot down anything over the horizon, and carries a thermonuclear payload.
Catch is, It doesn't know its a robot.
Early AI research hit a dead end until someone just decided to simulate every function of the human brain. The resulting computer model was a perfect emulation, the only problem was... well It thought it was human. To get around this they put it in a lifelike simulation in which they are test pilots. Trained to fly under the radar and deliver a precision nuclear strike without being detected.
This works fine until one squadron suddenly goes rogue. Maybe they realized everything was a lie and decided to get revenge for 20 years of fake memories, Maybe they decided to "Win the war", Or maybe there just under enimy control. All we know is that it's headed towards Washington DC and that no human pilot can stop it.
In the end the only ones who can save the world is the second squadron. |
