When John Romero left Id and formed Ion Storm the worlds press were ecstatic and predicted big things would be on their way from the new developer. Never has a game been rubbished, ripped apart and slandered quite so vehemently as this one and rightly so, it was years late and sucked so badly. For myself, I could never get out of the starting area, which I suppose is in itself quite shocking.
Bizarrely Kemco did a GamBoyColour version of it that was a Zelda style adventure that Romero wrote the dialogue for. After the debacle with the PC game the GBC one was quietly dropped even though it was finished, even more strange is the game is pretty good and is available off this page as a free legal ROM file to stick in your emulator.

This page also shows a timeline for Daikatana development and lists all the myriad disasters along the way.
A review of the GBC version is here http://bestof2004.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3137230 |

Daikatana weren't a good game, but also not that bad how everyone said... But *very* bad for John Romeros reputation I think. Never heard something about / from him after this debacle...
Does anyone now what he's working on now? |

I played a demo of Hyperspace Delivery Boy a while back. I quite liked it. But now www.hyperspacedeliveryboy.com redirects to some horrible mess of popups and a company trying to sell me a subscription to some kind of service that doesn't actually mention the game at all, and appears to cost as much as two or three MMORPGs. Don't they realise that's a complete turn-off? Is it imposed by the publisher? The page has SCAM and RIPOFF written all over it. (Right down to the bit saying it's free if you cancel in the first month, but that you are automatically billed every month.) Why do they associate themselves with publishers like that? |

No, I think they self-publish. They just let the domain lapse and someone jumped on it. congocube.com too. They've still got a Hyperspace Delivery Boy page, though, if you fiddle with the URLs. I downloaded the demo years ago but never played it, I'll make sure I do this time.
Hopefully that means they're too busy making a killing with N-Gage games to worry about maintaining their site. But still might be worth dropping them a note, it's a quick job to patch up. |
