you guys go at this game a little wiered.

you SHOULD be looking ahead.

befor you enter a node you would look at enemy positions and how long it would take to clear the intier area befor they reach you if you gear you ship up to mine like mad, if they can amke it to you that quick just make ur ship combat and collect the dead bodies of ur fallen opponets by advancing on them...

its better to reconfigure the ship every time then to use one generic one, trust me on that

yeah, but what happens when your 'mothership' ship gets blown up, and you're facing 2 miners? the problem with having a 'everyone does something else' is that if one of them gets blown up, the other 2 might as well too...

I like to have two ships with 3-5 cargo bays. The third one is loaded with mines and missiles, as a sort of "Nuke" craft. Smile I use it when the going gets tough.

3-5 cargo bays are more than enough to do some good mining. Sometimes more can overfill the Aegis' storage, which is a waste of mining. Before a boss, I remove the bays to give my ships more maneuverability.

I prefer to have 3 ships:

1) an all-purpose ship (ex: devastator, 2 beam 4's, 4 ion 4's, missile drones, 3 nova 3's, many bomb bays)
2) a heavy mining / bombs ship (ex: same as above, but with a lot of cargo bays, making it overweight)
3) a fast ship (ex: avenger, 2 beam 4's, 2 ion 4's, missile drones, 4 nova 2's or 3's)

I find that if you configure your all-purpose ship properly, it really can be very close to "all purpose"... no need for different combat ships, except maybe for a fast one for intercept purposes.

Eh. Right now I have two main ships I use - one's just a backup. One of them I go for maximum spread and infinite ammo only, making it a good miner - and spammer. The second one is all missiles/probes - anything that can aim. After that, all enemy encounters are no problem, as long as the Aegis is close by. I usually have at maximum two cargo bays - that's more than enough to recover everything from a shipwreck, which is where the real money is. Oh, and I set everything to primary, because energy isn't an issue after Generator 4 and the missile ship would have 4 or more missile bays.

I say if you can't do it with a single ship, then your ships aren't good enough.
I beat the game twice with a single ship, without blowing up once.
To do that, I had Particles on the nose, Ions on the inners and Plasmas on the outers.

Extra missles are better than extra novabombs in my opinion, then again, I did only Just Get those novabombs and had only built up two bomb bays by that time. I didn't see the need for any more. Rarely use them since they're in with the plasma torps, but the infinite missle pods seem to tide me over until things get that intense.

Long story short, Using mass weaponry is all good, but if you can't mine with it, you don't have a good ship layout, IMHO.

By "beat the game with a single ship" do you mean you only built one custom ship all game, or that you only had one custom ship at a time? Also, were you playing on hard?

If I'm intentionally making the game hard on myself, I'll limit myself to one ship (or less) but in general, I like to have 3 ships just for the occasional special task. One of my ships gets about 95% of the flight time, though.

One custom ship at a time. I imagine if I played hard-mode, I might try to build a specialized ship... But I still think it'd be a waste of resources to have two devestators. I can see if you're building up from a prowler, and you save the prowler for special tasks... fitting it with an engine-4 and some cargo bays would be great!

From the top of the "Deadly" list in Campaign mode (and dang proud of passing someone that didn't even beat the game for cryin' out loud):

14 saves, 5 ships.

See my previous post for the general configs of the ships, although I did trim off Nova Bombs for to keep VERITAS (which topped 10k kills) and V2 (which took it home after VERITAS was WAAAAYY too close to the magma snake when the off-screen Cannon3 tagged it).

The fifth ship, however....ooh, this one was fun to play with..

Runabout Hull (yes, you heard me, Runabout)
Engine 4
Generator 4
Beam Cannon 2 x2
Beam Drone x2

That's it.

That Beam Cannon 2 means I didn't outfit it until in the heart of Zone 5
No shields
No grav beam
No secondary fire

Why?
I'm glad you asked that.

I've noticed that my ship always responded better when a Jammer was in the node, and my shields were inactivated: it was as if there was less going on, and I could slide a little quicker.

Also, I remember when I first played, and how I could just fly by the yellow shot from the drone before I had a Shield, but if it hit the Shield (when equipped), even though it wouldn't have hit my ship if the shield weren't there, the shield still absorbed it.

I also got to test the statement about Drones being at a position relative to the ship: they are as far away from center on a Runabout as they are from center on a Devastator. Boo hiss, it made for a toothy shot. Razz

Hence, TEST was born. And it did dang well against fighter squads: The little ball of lighting charged rather well, it ran really really fast. It always seemed to need repair, but it was terribly cheap to repair. Even raked in more than it's fair share of kills.
Would I have taken it against a capital ship? Meh, prolly not. I wouldn't even park it out in front of the larger armada (as opposed to 3 frigates and like oh, 5-6 drones that always seemed to collapse the wormhole unnecessarily).

Does that make me the best thing to happen to Starscape since the station scoop? Heck no.
Just try to use 14 tech researches better in combat.

Devastator
6x lvl4 beam lasers
4x lvl3 nova bombs
10x bomb bays
1x lvl4 battery
lvl4 engine
lvl4 generator
lvl4 shields

Avenger
4x lvl4 beam lasers
9x cargo bays
lvl3 grav beams
lvl4 engine
lvl4 generator
lvl4 shields

Prowler
4x lvl2 Beam lasers
2x Beam Dromes
2x Nova Bombs
lvl4 Engine
lvl4 Generator

Bet you didnt notice I like the beam lasers and nova bombs. :p
The devastator is overweight and handles like a pig, but there's nothing like taking out an entire screen of enemys with a dozen nova bombs and laser blasts. Very usefull when the Aegis gets mobed, let off a few bombs, and no more problems.

The avenger is the resourcer, or if I need a faster ship.

Prowler is just fun to use and damn fast.

Since the mines spawn under the ship at the same speed the ship is, you have to be in the mob b4 you can use them to full effect. If you run at a mob full speed, let the mines go, then cut engines, turn, and hit the after burner moving away from the mob, the mines will fly right into the middle of them taking out everything. Leaving you safely out of the way to take out and survivers.

I'm currently using two Devastator-class ships, with a third under construction. Each is runnig on L4 engines, generators, and shields, with L4 batteries as needed.

Shank (primary fighter):
2 L4 ion guns for taking out those pesky drone-clouds around Gravitons
2 L4 blasters because the whole 'arc of death' thing never gets old
2 Missile Drones because autotracking is worth more than raw damage
3 Nova Bombs with something like 6 extra bays
L3 grav beam
2 Cargo Bays (for looting capital ship wreckage)

Shaft (miner):
2 L4 beams
L3 grav beam
8 cargo holds, because I like being able to mine an entire node in two trips

Shine (heavy fighter, under construction):
6 L4 beams
2 beam drones

I honestly don't like bombs... for some reason, whenever I launch them, they tend to fly out behind my ship, which isn't where I want them to go... I do tend to fly backwards a lot, but thats just cuz I like to show off for the Aegis crew... That mechanic girl is a hottie! Wink

But that doesn't matter. They just eject out of your ship, usually behind you, but then when they explode, you get all the homing shot missile things. One of my ships has i think 4 nova bombs on it, and it'll wipe out an enemy swarm in no time.
You do need to use more then one bomb at a time for best results.

Polaris, Devastator class, latest and last:

Game time 4:31:42, 5802 kills (why yes, I do enjoy camping drone carriers). Beams more practical, but ion cannons were much more fun, what with the bouncing and spread angle. Nova bombs nice modern take on the smartbomb concept, but find them misnamed (would have called them Salamander, Nova sounds more like huge blast); have annoying tendency to hit W instead of E in a hurry, blast precious resources to funny colored dust (only hits ever scored with rockets were ore gems)

Preceded by Mizar (Runabout class; fate: scrapped for resources), Deneb (Prowler class; fate: scrapped for resources), Vega (Prowler class; fate: lost in mothership battle) and Sirius (Avenger class; fate: lost in freak space worm accident. Space worms very annoying; not quite as annoying as the limited screen space though, shooting at radar blips not a lot of fun)

THink about this..

Runabout... with two beams two novabombs... a quick run through an enemy horde, dropping bombs as I went... run back to the Aegis faster than the horde as they all go 'BOOM' and hide behind the Aegis while trigger-happy Bud takes out the remaining forces with a Cannon3 and four Turret3. Resupply, repeat.

I may love Ions... but I also had some fun beamer configurations.

A config I suggested to a friend of mine he still uses even now. Mixed beams on a prowler. No shields, no cargo pods, no missiles. Not even a grav beam. This thing could FLY... kinda reminded me of a Storm Petrel configuration I had later on in Independence War 2... man that game was huge...
