Greetings everyone.

Here's three games I didn't see mentioned that are non-free, indie, and non-casual.

Flatspace II

Wik

Mexican Motor Mafia

And I'd like to second at least one Spiderweb game. Geneforge 4 has my vote.

The PC TryBeforYouBuy indie scene, as it used to be, is shrinking and everyone needs to do what they can to help promote it. By pushing what we see as the best in indie gaming we'll do our bit to help indie gaming in general (and help ourselves too).

Sadly, if someone wanted to make a living as an indie developer now and asked my advice, I wouldn't recommend traditional PC indie development (i.e. arcade games, rpg's, shootemups, etc).

p.s. we need better terminology here - we've got flash games, console downloadables, casual games, free games and indie games. None of those names are very good really.

p.p.s slightly ironic that the only way to ensure a reliable download and purchase experience while also making a bit of money is to use reflexive arcade links i.e. one of the big casual portals luring away all the developers. Still, at least reflexive will host non-casual games. Good luck getting a non-casual game on any of the other portals.

Aquaria was just recently released, and it definitely definitely definitely deserves a very high spot on this list.

Aquaria looks beautiful, thanks for the tip. I think I'll probably buy it, although I've not yet managed to find my way to the limits of the demo.

Just added "Threadspace: hyperbol" to the list, nuts name but a sweet game. Suffers from all the usual problems of multiplayer indie games i.e. few players, the odd idiot. I still put many hours in and had a lot of fun.

Venture Arctic goes on the list. Took me a while to get into it, I was looking for the objectives and waiting for the pay off, but it's actually a Sims-like experience of slowly nurturing and watching this mini ecosystem. After a while I couldn't stop. A game where killer whales come right onto the beach to try and grab the new polar bear cubs - cool!

Darkside enters the hallowed halls of gaming greatness. Easy to get into and quite simple, I loved it and was soon sucked in and suffering RSI in my fire button finger Smile I haven't played a good shmup in a while so this was a welcome change of pace.
