Yes, I'm going to keep complaining that gaming in Australia sucks. Today, it's what games the government thinks we shouldn't get our grubby little hands on.
Yes, the government. Government regulations. Australia is one of the few countries where games are rated by a government body (the OFLC, which also rates pretty much everything else). A quick search of wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_computer_and_video_games#Australia) reveals that there have probably been more games banned (or forcibly censored) here than anywhere else.
Unlike the US, sales are restricted by the federal government, not by the states (we only have 6 of them anyway), so it's not like I can just pop over the border to buy games (like I can for fireworks and porno... seriously).
The craziest thing is that there is no adults only rating (which is what most of the banned games would recieve, were there one). There is one for film (if you want to get technical two) and except in very extreme cases nothing else is banned this way.
Would you live in a country where the last three GTA games have been banned, censored, or both? I get back to the point from my last rant:
Why should we? |

Why ban a GTA game when they are plainly marked for 16+ (in the uk anyway). For the government to just ban them implies they don't believe shop keepers are enforcing the age rating. That's ok, fair enough. Why not just introduce heavy fines for any shop caught selling a 16+ game to someone under age?
Presumably retailers are allowed to sell alcohol and cigarettes? Cinemas and dvd rental places show/sell violence/horror adult movies? There are fines in place for selling them to minors right?
Is it too expensive to enforce good retail behaviour or perhaps there are legal reasons stopping them introducing heavy punishment for retailers? Really?
They aren't just doing it to be nasty surely? |

How come books manage to avoid classification?
I read some fantasy novels with pretty intense sexual action when I was 8 years old. Not that it seemed to do me any harm |

You're completely right, Poo Bear - everywhere that sells adult goods faces heavy fines or even jail time for selling to minors, so I don't see why they can't just do that for games.
Poo Bear wrote: | they are plainly marked | You haven't seen Australian game/dvd covers lately, have you? They are plainly marked (so much so that there were actually plenty of complaints when they brought the new markings in).
Also, it's not like these rules have been put in because of nutcases lately - we had these laws in the early 90s (a game released in 1992 was banned).
We do get some of the banned games eventually, but only in censored form, which, to put it simply, sucks. |
