I'm with Mark on this one ... we accept the ways of the system without questioning it ... we should go against the system changing things the way we want so that everyone would end up happy. We pursue ...

I cannot get past level 2b, bloody game, I almost smashed my keyboard into the monitor Smile

You've forgotten how much rote learning those old games involve. Learn the levels by heart until you know ...

Interesting, so you have 3 lives and then you restart?
Sure, or you have one life with a regenerating shield, or one life with a multi-hit-point hull which is repaired between levels, something like ...

The problem with punishing failure is that it creates an instability in play. If you're struggling to succeed at a task, whoops! Failure makes it even harder! A downward spiral ensues, making it feel ...

Hydorah is a nice distillation of shmup, although I think it would have benefitted from an infinite lives mode. Ah well thats what hex editors are for Razz

I think it would benefit from not de-powe ...

The questions Starscape Junkie raises about how much to procedurally generate are interesting. What makes Spelunky so special is that there are clearly differentiable levels, with different hazards an ...

I've often idly pondered this question, and playing Hydorah (see the thread in "Game Talk" board) made me think about it again.
