Playing a thief in a fantasy medieval setting is such a glorious concept and Thief3 really does it justice (almost). Lurking in the shadows, running from the rozzers (police), lifting purses and coshing the unwary. Bliss. You should definitely give this one a try.

There is still a lot of room for improvement though:

1. loading times between fairly small areas spoil the immersive feeling of exploring a city. There aren't many people so it doesn't really feel "alive" and everything looks a bit too similar making it easy to get lost.

2. people soon forget your presence i.e. if you mug someone or even kill someone everyone soon calms down again and it doesn't really affect anything. Guards will even whistle a happy tune as they walk over dead comrades. A bug means I've only played it on "normal" difficulty so perhaps things are different on "hard".

3. getting the weapons to work can be frustrating, you are trying to either knock someone out or kill them and sometimes it just doesn't work. They raise the alarm and you die instead. Frustrating.

4. you can get lost fairly easily as the map is on a separate screen (you cannot overlay it and leave it on) and you cannot see your own current position on it.

5. when people get knocked out or die they activate a rag doll physics simulation and 90% of the time the result looks stupid and the sense of immersion is ruined. Bodies bent at unnatural angles and bouncing around.

6. hiding in the shadows is a bit dubious, sometimes they can be right next to you and not see you and at other times they come charging right up. All the while your visibility jewel is telling you that you are perfectly hidden. Frustrating.

7. In some situations (like shops) you aren't supposed to be able to hurt/steal/kill people, so they just lock out the controls. This seems like a cheap lazy way of getting round the problem and ruins the feeling of immersion. The whole game is about freedom and you are a murdering thief, why can't you kill the shop keeper if you want? The developers should have thought of better ways to deal with it.

demo download:

On the down side, it is a bit buggy and crashed on me a couple of times, it only works in winXP or win2000 and you better have the very latest nVidia drivers (and nVidia gfx card). You will also need a fairly ninja computer, I have an AthlonXP1700 w 512MB and a GeForce4 and it's just playable. A patch is due out though so some of those issues may be fixed.

I know that sounds bad, but it might be related to half the development staff being made redundant the instant the game looked finished though. Now where have I heard of that happening before...oh yeh, it happened to us (mwahahahahaha).

The patch is already out. Razz It fixes most issues related to save games (The AI bug, and the disabling of KO animations; now the bodies should display a short animation before they go ragdoll, stopping the backbreaking limbo appearance)

Killing the shopkeepers would be kind of ... suicidal. Technically, you can survive on whatever you scavenge from the city, but ...

On true Expert difficult, the AI are a lot smarter, and a lot more persistent. Unfortunately, they can still be stymied by a 2 foot ledge.

The weapons are a bit hard to get used to, but if you practice a bit, it eventually becomes second nature.
