This is one of my favourite types of horror movie, take a crazy scenario and then explore what normal people might actually do about it, ensuring everything makes sense within the logic of the world you create. Is there a genre label for that already? In ATB aliens end up crashing into south london, near a particularly rough block of flats full of gangs. Some street kids run into one, take it down and then all hell breaks loose as dozens of its 'friends' come looking for payback. Not scary, although there a few shock moments that made me jump. It's fun because the kids put in a believable performance, tooled up as they are with baseball bats, knives and one samurai sword. I like the bit where a young 'civilian' woman suggests they call the police, everyone stops and just stares at her, 'yeh, right'. Classic.
p.s. for something less fantastical, but perhaps even better, check out 'Attack the gas station'. Another cult classic.
