I'm not very familiar with the Marvel hero Thor in his comic book form, although he's obviously a fantastic character from Nordic myth. The film has gained glowing reviews so I had a look. I don't know why it's a 12A, there is no swearing, the violence isn't gruesome and it isn't scary. In fact I think it would make a great film for the kids, the story is simple and wholesome, the action grand and cgi-tastic.
Sadly, that's why I wasn't that impressed. I was expecting costumes and set design drawn from the rich viking heritage, but it was all plastic/chrome/anonymous. The Bifrost bridge was very cool looking though. The story was extremely limp, the script average. None of the characters were well developed, it was all quite yawn inducing, not bad, just not good. Action scenes were suitably exciting. A great cast mostly wasted really, Anthony Hopkins had little to say, Natalie Portman had nothing to do. Chris Hemsworth who played Thor was very good. Damn, I knew I should have gone to see Insidious instead!
It reminded me of Harry Potter, they crammed a lot in, but when you look back, it just wasn't compelling or interesting when it had such great potential.
