I was excited about Tron2, I had such fond memories of the first film. That is, until I watched the first film again. It still looks cool in a retro way, but the dull story just plods along. Then I saw some of the Tron2 reviews coming in and they were saying the same thing 'style over substance'. Still, I went to see it anyway and was presently surprised. My expectations were quite low and I think that helped.
The main character is an unknown actor and he doesn't exactly sparkle, his performance reminded me of Anakin Skywalker in the new star wars movies. A young Jeff Bridges has been daringly put together with CGI and his animated character gets quite a lot of face time. It's very well done, but the 'uncanny valley' is in full effect. I couldn't help but drift away from the performance to analysing the technical details.
On the plus side visuals are gorgeous and worth a viewing on their own, I didn't opt for the 3D tax, I find it an annoyance these days, but I was still blown away by the work put into the effects and overall style.
I couldn't take my eyes of Quorra either, she reminded me of Major Kusanagi from Ghost In The Shell, very beautiful but with a slightly inhuman quality.
I think the film was a tad over long, but the story, while not particularly original, was well thought out and interesting. So I'd definitely recommend going to see it.
