There is a new portal (yes, another one) starting up that could be some proper competition for Steam perhaps. The idea is to make installing/playing/buying as super easy as possible. So they've magically gotten around all the popup warning messages, where do you want to install, do you have DirectX, etc, etc - and simplified everything.

With Steam you have to install the Steam client, which isn't that much of a hassle, but still. With Spoon you have to install a web plugin, which does seem faster and even easier. An added bonus are these simple html buttons you can stick on facebook or add on to a review.

I think they do need to work hard on matching Steam's community features (forums, achievements, friends, etc) and it could do with looking a bit more fun/stylish.

As I've already got both of these games, if I click on these buttons the game just starts with zero fuss. Quite clever.

Getting a game on Spoon is scarily easy, they took the normal version with its full installer and first-run pop-up options menus and just 'made it work'.

I wonder how it works?

I guess they could install manually and then take a snapshot of the install folder, registry and mydocuments folders, fill in all the best guesses in any popups and dump that into a file. So what happens if those settings don't work for someone, does it just fail? Interesting stuff.

Poo Bear,

Thanks for partnering with us to put your games on Spoon! Glad you like the service and were able to see its benefits firsthand. Just to let you know: we're working on making these Spoonfeed buttons a little more sleek in design, and we're also working on the community aspect you mentioned. Coming in the new year expect to see the ability to rate games, or review and comment on them.

We encourage everyone to try both Mr. Robot and Starscape on Spoon.

Thanks again. Keep making great games!

-Blake
