An interesting list of all the well known game genres and their status in terms of publisher interest.

http://blog.ihobo.com/2009/09/endangered-games.html

Can games really go extinct - I bought the newly polished Monkey Island the other day, I love the way the get around the inherent frustration that often crops ups by having context sensitive "clues" as to what to do next. I know it's a cop out, but it makes the game much more palatable to a new audience. The nice thing is you get quite vague hints initially and as you keep demanding more and more they get increasingly obvious until you "get it".

I'm not sure MonkeyIsland will ignite the genre again, that would depend on its sales success and I haven't heard raptures. So maybe it is an extinct genre. Geometry Wars was a surprise smash on XBLA and that didn't seem to kick start a 2d shooter renascence - or did I miss it? I suppose there was "Space Invaders Extreme" - which was excellent and "Schizoid" - which wasn't.

It's odd because you would think a game genres appeal would normally be timeless really. If I found it fun 10 years ago why is it not fun now?

Seems to me that genre are absorbing each other.

Sure nobody wants to play a city based racer anymore. But people DO play games like GTA where you can race cars in a city.
If the developer is going to make a whole city, There might as well be more things to do in it.
Games are just getting more complex.

What I want is a game that would be a cross between Sim City and GTA.
Like the old "streets of sim city" or "Sim Copter" where you could use your Sim City 2000 cities as maps to race cars or fly around in.
