...is only one of my excuses for being away from here for so long. For RTS' in general, its been damned addicting.

Well, to be fair, the most addicting part to me is when playing a primarily defensive game, when you get immersed in building defenses like barb wire, sand bags and tank traps and laying mines. This happens most for me on larger skirmish maps because I tend to let my AI pals run interference at the front lines while I'm doing that.

Some other fun things I like about it:

1. Choosing command doctrines which give their own units in Infantry Doctrine, Airborne Doctrine and Armor.

2. I like the way taking and holding territory works with strategic spots that provide munitions, fuel or adds unit population.

3. Stuff like tall buildings or high terrain matters for units like snipers.

4. Some maps any unit can go anywhere pretty much, but there are some that have infantry only areas which present different options for flanking the enemy.

5. I like how cover works in the game (it shows you a shield icon next to a unit and lets you know if its in no cover, light cover or heavy cover). If a fire fight starts, infantry units will gravitate to the nearest type of cover unless its being pinned down by enemy fire (in which case its probably better to retreat).

6. This one probably relates a little bit to the territory control stuff, but I also like that you can occupy an abandoned building and turn it into a forward barracks, so you don't have far to go to call in infantry. I also like that you can garrison a building and that can be a firing base with your guys shooting through the windows.

That said, there are a few cons, at least one for me related to the difference between the stock game and its latest patch 1.71.

In the stock game, while building wire, sandbag or tank traps, it used to be you could delete sections of them if they didn't line up quite right and do it over. Instead the best you can do apart from building a tank with a bulldozer (the more expensive way to this, plus it takes up unit population if you do) to take those sections out, is try to stop the engineers in mid build, select the section of whichever is being built and halt it.

That's pretty much my only pet peeve between versions. Lately I've just been downloading new maps and playing them in skirmish but there are also a good sized fistful of mods out there to change the game's dynamics in different ways.

I haven't checked out Opposing Fronts yet, but that one adds the British and Panzer Elite groups with their own campaigns. Its not an expansion so much as a game by its self (at least, I don't believe you need the first game to play it).

Yep, its a big one for a demo alright.

This one was an impulse buy for me but I didn't get it until it had been out for almost a year. In a way it worked out because there was a bunch of maps waiting for me to try out after I got through the campaign (spread out, it took a couple weeks).

It looks like I may have to do what I did with Company of Heroes and wait a while to buy Opposing Fronts. I'm hearing a lot about how the game requires you to log online in order to play most times even if its just skirmish mode or to play the campaigns.

I'm hoping that in time relic will release more user friendly patch updates. Its a shame really. Players who have the game and have played it enjoy it, they just don't care for all the oddness in getting it to run in the first place.
