| All of them can be used to repair your ships and the Aegis, though the rarer elements are more powerful. |

This reminds me, I think the way Research/Build used elements was a bit screwwy in the numbers. Because I always have the most of the rarest (Green) and least of the Common (Purple). And I shoudnt even use the words rare and common as they seemed to appear at the same rate.
Game balancing is a *****. |

| When you use resources they are automatically taken in such a way as to try and ballance stores. So whatever you have most of will be used first until everything is equal. |

Now this would indicate to me that the crew has a way to convert the materials into different things. I mean, the damage can be repaired by any element, with no change in performance, that must mean you're converting them somehow. Why can't you do that when you need a little extra of one color for something? Or when you're topped off on something?
OH yeah! Because they're a bunch of hooting howler monkeys! I forgot...
I swear, the real purpose of the Aegis must have been to get all the really stupid people off of the earth...
And btw, for the next time you need resources of a particular color...
Spoiler (highlight to read): Asteroids have the most purple.
Enemy Ships have the most green.
Magma Snakes have marginally more yellow than other sources but it's hard to whack the snakes without breaking the yellow... |

Anyone remember "Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" ??
Due to the impending annihilation of the planet by the dreaded Star Goat we need to evacuate. The first ship will carry all the unemplyed, the fast food salesmen, the elderly, the women who squirt you with perfume in shops, the marketing men and middle management types. They were chosen to go first due to their great importance to society
As the great ship left orbit the crew thought it odd that they couldn't contact the other ships following behind....ah well, never mind, I'm sure they will catch up. |

It's sad... I'm quoting a spoiler and answering it with...
Another spoiler!

Spoiler (highlight to read): I've found that the two best ways to kill magma Snakes while keeping their precious elements intact both involve the act of luring them. One (my prefered method, but not always viable): lure one or two back to the Aegis and let the big guns kill the fardling things in one or two shots from the main cannon while you play standby with the gravity beam. This tends to leave nearly all of the Magma Snake's potential resources intact most of the time. Just don't lead too many snakes back towards the station at any one time, because the cannons are a bit slow to turn when dealing with multiple opponents along different approach vectors.
Two (akward with smaller ships and weaker weapons, but possible): Fight a retreating battle. Once you've blown up one section, don't push the follow-up. Instead, fly a little further away, preferably in a direction away from where the resources from the last strike are heading. If you're worried about asteroids, enemy ships, or anything else that might destroy a particularly attractive chunk, you can always circle back before trying to blow up the next section of snake... |
As for why repairs seem to be done with ANY color, while R&D requires certain percentages for anything to get done...
Engineers are a strange and mystical people.
Fear them... |
