Mr Robot featured on the fileplanet front page, it the subject of their "Indi Spotlight".
Not a Mr Robot player myself, but was glad to see it there. That should catch a few eyes

Yeah it was cool to see us there. Traditionally, indie games don't really do that well off of mainstream sites, but I think the context for that has started to change. I think Defcon actually may have changed a few opinions, and now people are looking out for some more interesting titles to tell people about. We've been getting unprecedented press interest - hopefully the same is happening for other indies.
I have to say, Fargo over at fileplanet is particularly enthusiastic about promoting indie games and has been doing so for a long time. |

Now it's on the front page of (at least the Australian version of) Gamespot.
Fost or Poo Bear, do you know what percentage of the sales of a game like this come from big sites?
By the way, why haven't I seen anything about Mr. Robot on Penny Arcade? I seem to recall reading many Starscape sales came from there. |

Specialist sites worked better for Starscape, so I don't know about MrRobot, I'd presume it will be the same. I suppose hard core people are quite set in their ways and know exactly what they like and aren't prepared to compromise anything. They are spoiled by blockbuster games I guess
I'm going to try and contact PA once version 1.1 is done and we've got some cash, PA is a mega big site so it's quite expensive. The people visiting PA did seem more open minded than the people visitng the huge gaming sites. |

Also don't forget PvPonline comic, I think they do similar things with their advertising. I think they use some kind of bidding system if your strapped for money, plus all ads are approved by Kurtz.
You may have to dig down into his blog entires for '07 to find out more about it. |

| I'd recommend checking out Project Wonderful. There's a lot of webcomics using it now (which judging from where I've seen your ads before comprises a large part of your target audience). And definitely see if you can get Penny Arcade again, that's how I found Starscape. |

It's a complete waste of time. Basically, advertising indie games does not work. The problem is that we sell a product at such a low price that to make any kind of return we need to get an incredibly low price for the adverts. A price that no site on the net actually advertises. This means a combination of constant bartering/bulk buying to get the price low. If there are any middle men or services that want a cut, you may aswell not bother because they are guaranteed to bump the prices up. I can see why webcomics might like this service, because it's likely they'll get higher returns more often, but for clients it's an exercise in losing money. I'm sure that over time people will realise this and the only people left will be the jiggly click banners who can afford to because when they scam someone it pays off big. |

| Just saw a Mr. Robot banner on VGCats. Is that the first ad for the game? |

I learned about Starscape and moonpod from a banner ad on userfriendly.org. I guess this was the first (and only) time I willingly clicked on a banner ad. Only because the game that was advertised looked really interesting.
I've seen this Mr.Robot ad some time ago (again) on userfriendly.org and I would have definitely clicked it for the same reason as for Starscape, because it looks so interesting.
Fost definitely knows how to do good banners. :-) |

Funnily enough, our 'ethos' with ads was all about not getting too in your face - I hate most adverts, so I always thought it best to make something subtle and pleasing to the eye, so if the viewer doesn't want to click on it, it should bother them as a nice backdrop image. It gets a pain though - everywhere we advertise, we are always told we need to write 'CLICK HERE!!!' all the time to increase clickthroughs |

Hm looking back, it's the same for me. I don't remember clicking any banner on purpose besides Starscape... I don't know what it was, but it looked so damn promising I couldn't stand it.
And after that, your site got me in an instant
So atm I have a 100% click/buy rate |
