For anyone who wants to try out the editor, here are the procedures for getting it to work (as of v0.83)

Quick Editor Tutorial

  • Start the editor
  • Enter an name for your adventure anc click 'ok'.
  • Click on 'Create room' (Note, many of the current parts the editor will fall down are to do with trying to add blocks when you haven't created/selected a room)
  • In the room creation dialogue box, name the room 'room1' and give it dimensions of 10,10,10, then click ok.
  • Important- you need to select the room you just created, or the editor will crash when you try to make anything. It is in the second drop down box on the rooms tab.
  • Press shift+s to save the world configuration file out.
  • Ok, now, lets add some blocks to our room. Click the 'static' tab.
  • From the available dropdown lists, choose 'Cryogenics' , 'Floors' and 'Floor' (or any floor tile you like really)
  • Click the 'create block' button. The floor block will appear as the cursor in the room. Press Enter to 'paint' the block. Cursor keys to move horizontally, and pageup/dn to move vertically.
  • Lets just fill in a section of floor for now.
  • Next, from the dropdowns, select cryogenics, Doors, 'Door' and add a door to the room. If we don't have at least one door, then the game will currently crash.
  • Lastly, we need to add a player start point. From the first drop down list, choose 'Script Objects'. Move the model of Asimov to where you would like the player to start (Note, he must be stood on the floor, or the game will crash on start) and press enter.
  • Press shift+s to save.
  • Press 'q' to quit the editor.
  • Exit the game
  • We need to hack a few text files now to make your custom adventure work (This will be automated eventually, and is just a hack so you can have a mess in the beta). IMPORTANT: changing any of these files to unicode may break them. If in doubt, use notepad.
    • Go to \My Documents\MrRobot\data\user\ad000
    • Open Games.config.
    • Wherever there is a question mark, you might need to add some data, so, change the following:

      • start: set this to the name of the room you want the player to start in.
(We used 'room1' above,so this line would be 'start room1')
      • roomgroups - this should be '0' (without quotes).

  • Start the game again
  • Go to profiles
  • Click the new game button (the bottom left one)
  • Your new adventure should show up in the list. Select it and press start.
  • If everything has worked, you should be in your own custom made room!

I must stress, that we aren't looking for editor bug reports for Mr. Robot version 1, although we will be fixing the basic errors that make it crash and require the above work-arounds. So it should be usable.

That said, feel free to post any comments or questions here. Oh, and if you make anything that looks cool, send us a picture Smile

I did try out the editor last night. After random button clicking the editor was still black. I got an error and Mr. Robot crashed. I'll try again tonight or tomorrow.

I'm kinda tired today cause I was up till 1:00 am playing Mr. Robot. You will be happy to know I find this game addictive as I had to tear myself from my computer to go get some sleep. And even better not one bug so far! Very Happy

Yeah, you need to use the above steps to get it to work at all at the moment. NOTE: I'm not asking people to look at the editor right now, it's just that many had expressed an interest.

I get as far as this. The custom game appears in the list, I can select it but the start-button is grayed out. Do we also have to change something in these lines in games.config:
Code:
   game_modes
   {
      m0   USERADV_COMPLETE
   }

no, that should be left as is.

if you could zip up your ad000 folder and email it to nick@moonpod.com
I'll take a look. Probably some step missing from the above list.

You're probably right.
world.config was missing this line:
Code:
room   "0.config"

I think that happens if you miss out the 'shift-s' save world part.
We'll put some warnings in for all this basic startup stuff at some point.

Hooray! I successfully made a playable empty room with a door! Very Happy This is neato. To bad I'm not creative enough to make any really good puzzles.

Inane- at what point did it do that?

That error looks like you have not selected a room, and tried to place something. Currently, the editor will allow you to go into 'place blocks' mode, even though you have no room. Which, naturally causes a crash. NOTE: after creating a new room, it IS NOT automatically selected (rubbish, I know!)

Incidentally - it would be interesting to know what things people try to work out first, as I'll concentrate on those things with the editor documentation...

I'm most interested in how you define a "win" point for your adventure, and how you get doors to link multiple rooms together. Also, how do you get water to look correct? Mine is all separated. And how do you rotate objects? (to make walls on the side of the room).

Woah, serious issue! I was playing my user adventure. Then I returned to the main menu and deleted the user adventure save game. Now the main menu reads Start and (a greyed out) continue instead of Profiles. So I can't go in and continue the regular game (I'm sure if I started a new game, then quit and chose my original one it would be fine though).

Fost, I'd be happy if you could say some things about water creation/editing.
I managed to create several water tiles, but they don't conjoin. How's it done correctly?

You should be able to - continue is active for the last thing you played, which you've now deleted. You should be able to find your other adventure via the start menu.

Fost, that happens once I select/create an adventure.

I click "Editor" in the main menu, it goes to windowed mode and tells me to select an adventure, I do, and bam, that happens.
