I just realised: this board's description in the index says
Quote:
(In Hybernation)
Me being the grammar police, does anyone else realise that it is spelt hibernation?

I'm a little disappointed in you Kone -- you're only batting 500. You were the first one to reply to this thread, and you didn't say anything about icarus using the wrong "to."

I noticed the Hybernation too, but I figured it wasn't worth making a whole thread about Razz

Well if you're that disappointed, I could correct anything I see, but I think that everyone would get sick of that incredibly quickly. It would be a good way to bring up my post count, though.

Agrajag and Sorrow, smilies do not end a sentence.
Sorrow, you need to put a full stop after the end bracket.

SethP, I also didn't say anything about...

Actually, it's been debated that whether or not smilies could replace the ends of sentences elsewhere, so I don't think you should act so... Vigilant of that aspect.

of that aspect.
Yes, but does /loves it count as a smilie? I don't think so.

Your grammatical observations are keen, good sir. I should like to test your abilities. If you can identify an error within this post, I shall be profoundly impressed, as I do not intend to commit one. To give you something greater to work with, I will deliver a brief lecture, the subject of which shall be anal-retentiveness.

It is commonly believed by native English speakers of the USA that the term "anal-retentiveness" refers directly to the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. That belief is simply not true. Anal-retentiveness is a neurophysiological disorder which often manifests in a human being which has been diagnosed with OCD. However, it is not necessarily a symptom of standard OCD. Anal-retentiveness can also indicate chronic stress and greed.

So ends my monologue. I certainly hope that you take from it the well-intending joke I meant to convey, as I mean you no affront. That truncheon you wield would leave a nasty bump on my head!

I know your post was more of a challenge to Konedima, but I'd like to point out that the sentence below could stand to lose the second comma:

If I were really smart, I could tell you why it sounds better (to me) that way. Maybe just a matter of opinion.

You may be correct, SethP. Those multi-comma sentences (the technical term for which I have forgotten) are a habit I picked up reading Edgar Allan Poe, though that scarcely makes it proper. I honestly don't know if it is. Hopefully, an answer will be presented.

Following complaints, I have investigated this construction. I suspect you of contravening grammatical law: to whit, using an object pronoun ("me") in place of a nominative.

Your double non sequitur in
1) implying a logical connection between grammar and spelling
2) implying that being a member of the linguistic police (grammar or spelling divisions) is relevant to whether anyone else knows the spelling of "hibernation"
has also been noted and is under serious investigation by the semantic division.

Remember, vernacular usage is not acceptable in an officer of the grammar police!

Another, more severe, grammar police impropriety has been reported to the GPCA.

Please hand in your grammar police uniform and weapon and report for mandatory training in elementary English grammar. It's is an acceptable contraction for either "it is" or "it has". The latter is described by a few sources (e.g. Chambers) as more informal than the former, but this is of little import as all contractions are generally considered informal.
