...makes me create things like this.

I think it was orignially going to be a vignette; it all stemmed just from the thought of JJ and the pilot talking early on in the game, and it went from there. I orginally had JJ scouring some capital ship wreckage for anything she could salvage, but at some point it transformed into the actual ship, and stayed so. I've deliberately kept the pilot's name the defaults and named the prowler hull ship the, er, Prowler, because everyone calls their ships different things. I like latin names myself, like Barbarus (Barbarian)

Also, there's no description of the pilot's physical appearence because each player will have thier own idea what he looks like. In one of my games, I've actually decided for a giggle to give him-well, her- a female name. After all, there's no real indication that the pilot is male or female, and the pilot in the Moonpod intro appeared to have breasts when I watched it once. Anyways, like I said, active imagination, plus some spare time (and Starscape's good fun, but 7 hours straight is too much even for me! Razz ) belches out this.

-------------
Somewhere in the hyper-grid...

...the star ship Aegis was travelling through hyper-space, looking slightly worse for ware after an encounter with Archnid, various burn marks and holes melted into parts of it's hull.

In the relatively unscathed docking bay a mechanic was sitting on the top of a prowler hull repairing said ship, the hum of the ship and tools by her side her only company.

The last fight with the Archnid had been close. Too close. A good part of the Aegis had superficial damage only, but one of the storage decks was now in vacuum and engine four was offline until further notice.

The pink haired mechanic gave a tired sigh.

The Prowler wasn’t in much better shape. How Jameson had managed to limp back to the Aegis in it she didn’t know. The generator’s power core had been damaged, one of the side pods was pretty much gone-not that weapons systems or the like had actually been in it-and ultimately vaguely resembled something she’d heard Maya call a Swiss cheese. She unscrewed a plate with the drill, and, hunched over the direct access port to the generator, electronics’ kit in hand, plugged said tool into one of the sockets and began to run a diagnostics on the ships generator.

Around ten minutes after she began she’d finished. Sitting up straight she smiled, give a small nod of satisfaction that she’d managed to repair it…

"You should be sleeping."

...and promptly gave a loud squeak of shock, nearly falling off the end of the ship backwards before regaining her balance. She gave the owner of the voice an flustered look, snapping "Don't sneak up on me like that Jameson!" in embarrassment

The pilot gave crossed his arms and gave shrug, a gentle smile tugging at his lips. "I've been watching you for a good three minutes now. Not my fault you find your work so fascinating." As he spoke he uncrossed his arms and approached the ship, looking up to the pink-haired mechanic, leaning lazily against a Runaround parked parallel to the Prowler. "Speaking of which, it's nearly midnight according to the Aegis' computers..." Jameson gave a mischievous smile, "I know you like your machines and all," his grin vanished, replaced by concerned look, "But you need to sleep Johnson."

"Call me JJ. Everyone does," she replied automatically before she picked up on what he'd said. "... midnight?"

He nodded.

"....wow. I get really wrapped up in my work!" she giggled in an attempt to lighten Jameson's mood. It failed miserably, getting her a worried look instead from the pilot.

"You're no good to anyone half asleep. This piece of rubbish," he gave the ship J.J was sitting on a gentle boot to emphasise the word 'rubbish', "can wait for eight hours."

A shake of pink hair.

"I can't do that and we both know it; if the Archnid were to attack now-"
"-then I'll get in the Runaround and blast the idiots in that."
"But that doesn't have a shield generator!"
A cocky smirk. "I'll just have to be more careful then."

J.J. glared at Jameson. "I've *got* to repair the Prowler! It's been turned into Swiss cheese; the power core in the generator was badly damaged by one of their ships... frankly, I'm amazed you didn't have to eject!" She threw hands above her. "Hell, I’m amazed you didn’t get killed!"

Another casual shrug. "You'll repair it; you're good at the mechanic lark... and the computer *said* I should eject-kept whining about an explosion imminent-but I figured you'd want Prowler back in..." Jameson had the decency to look bashful. "...Well... back, anyway..."

The hum of the Aegis was all that broke the silence as J.J. gave him an incredulous look, mouth hanging open. "Jameson, this doesn't seem to have occurred to you so I'm going to point it out to you now; you're the only pilot left. That mea-"

"-means this wretched ship is *defenceless* until those turrets are up and running," Jameson interrupted, "and even *those* are lousy last-ditch weapons. I am the *first* and *last* line of defence for the ship and you..." the pilot gave JJ something between a wry and bitter smile. "I know, JJ… I know."

They stared unseeingly into each others eyes, reflecting upon Jameson's blunt words as the tension evaporated. It had been the elephant in the room; not even Captain Fubuki had raised the issue-but everyone knew and it had been gnawing at everyone; especially Jameson.

He was the only pilot left. The only one who could protect them.

Drawn out of her musings by a noise, JJ realised Jameson had said something. "Mm? Sorry..."
"Just said it feels good, getting it out in the open."
J.J. nodded, smiling slightly. Jameson may have been the only pilot, but she'd seen what he'd done to those mine layers and their escorts through one of the Prowler's video uplinks. He may have been the only pilot but they'd be fine. However, her smile left as she remembered Maya. "And I'm the only mechanic..." she thought out loud. Jameson didn't bat an eye, confidence saturating his voice when he next spoke:
"You'll be fine. You seem to be doing okay so far."

"Yes, but I'm still not sure..."

She trailed off as Jameson used the steps built into the side of the ship to climb up to the roof of the ship and join her.

"...what are you doing?"
"Coming up to you," Jameson replied as he continued his ascent.
"Why?"
"Because I want to be totally sure you hear me when I say this."

And as he finished saying this he sat down next to JJ, turning to her, studying her face. She suddenly felt very self conscious, but returned the gaze.
"I know Rendon didn’t pick you out of all the other mechanical engineers in the galaxy if she didn't think you had the ability to match her skills. You’ll be fine.”

Smiling, she felt her cheeks flush at the praise. Breaking eye contact, she suddenly found an incredible need to run a second diagnostics on the generator.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence."

“Anytime.”

Before she realised what she was actually doing, she look at Jameson and smiled. “Jameson?”

“Yea?”

“You’re a good pilot… I know that I-all of us will be fine.”

Jameson’s change in behaviour was dramatic; neither JJ nor Jameson had realised it, but he’d been tense, and at her complement he visibly relaxed. The pink-haired mechanic’s eyes widened slightly as Jameson gave her the first genuine smile she’d ever seen him make; she found it infectious, and smiled back.

“So, are you going to come to bed with-“ Jameson cut himself off as he realised what he was about to say, or more importantly, *how*. JJ looked at him blankly for a second after he cut himself off before she realised what he’d been meaning to say, and struggled to contain her laughter.

“Fine, you win. Yes, I’ll sleep,” she sniggered, feeling her resolve crumble at the smile on his face. She liked it, and bed was actually sounding *really* good. She wrinkled her nose in mock disgust, mischief twinkling in her eyes. “..but not with *you*, that’s for sure.” Grabbing her tools she pushed herself off the side of the ship opposite the pilot before he could reply with a come-back. As she landed heavily on her feet she grinned widely as she heard his smirk in his yell:
“Oi!”
-----------------------

As I said, this was originally just meant to be JJ and the pilot talking, but when I look at it now, it seems like they're flirting.

...hm..... maybe something else to write if I'm bored again. Wink

*seems* like they are flirting? You can cut the sexual tension with a knife in that room!

Sorry, I would have posted earlier, but the web server had issues Smile
Really enjoyed that anyway, I felt like I was in the room with them. It's interesting how different people have interpreted Jameson - Mark was very careful to write Rin's part, and personal interest in Jameson as ambiguous as possible, so that it works whatever sex (or preference) the player is.

We love getting Starscape fan fiction at Moonpod!

I enjoyed it also, thanks. It was a short reminder how much fun there is to be had in the world of Starscape, and made me nostalgic for a revisit. The only thing you did wrong was that there was not enough!

I keep toying with a little story for Starscape myself, but I never seem to have much time to think about it. Sad

Dude. And I thought I was the only one that drew that deep into games. My scenario was a little bit different though, here's an exerpt:

---JJ blew her hair out of her face and tugged again, but the battery was stuck good. Had there actually been any rockets left in the launcher she had removed pieces of not five minutes ago, the entire starboard nacelle would've exploded and maybe even taken Jameson with it.

"One lucky shot by a drone and I get stuck pulling a blown, stubborn battery. As much fun as all this is Jameson could at the very least lend a hand with the repairs once in awhile..." Unknown to her, of course, Jameson was standing not four meters back, leaning on a crate and chuckling quietly in his head...

'All she ever needed to do was ask and...' "I'd be glad to help." He called out. Not exactly the best timing JJ jerked up in a motion of combined slipping off the battery and shock at the last pilot they had being a short distance away when she'd just... and of course she lost her train of thought instantly as she smacked her head on the open access panel to the starboard engine pod.---

This is pretty good, you could expand it and make it into a full story if you have the time. And it does take a lot of time but its worth the effort.

You must not have read my evil Katamari Fanfiction... or spoken to anybody at Livejournal Xenosaga Hehe... Anyway, I like your style. Sounds like the kinda stuff I'd be writing, if I wrote Starscape fictions. ^_^

Much more fanfiction and we could write a book.
I've oft wondered what the names of the people not aboard the aegis are... And aboard, when you research or build, you do it with five people. Are those the five we know? I'll guess they are, and then assume that the others deserve names.

As such, I will name 8 of them, in the interest of the fanfiction, and in memory of the lander crew of Star Control 2: Kowalski, Fritz, Chin, O'Donnell, Luigi, and the Liebermann triplets comprised most of the lander crew, and they were all unintentionally destroyed upon examination of an abandoned Spathi Interluder. They will be missed. =P

Anyhow, I like how "Prowler", in the fanfiction above, is treated as a Proper Name, not "the prowler" or "your prowler". Stands out better, I say. I'm going to name my ships such things from now on. And when they blow up, I'll just reset the game. =p

a fun thing i cant seem to keep myself from doing is: when i pull out of Aegis in "Hyperion" (my serverly overpowered Devastator) i always say to myself stuff like "Hyperion out!" or "You collapse my Wormhole you face Hyperion!" and when im docking ive sometimes said stuff like "Hyperion Request Docking" lol...

also because of how i previously played some mr. robot, i named myself Asimov in Starscape, lol
