Poo Bear and I were talking the other day about the most depressing films we've seen - I don't mean depressingly bad just truly sad films that tear your heart out and stamp on it in front of your very eyes.
We came up with:
Hana-Bi, by Takeshi Kitano
Dolls, also by Kitano
and 'Grave Of The Fireflies' - one of the older Ghibli animations.
All Japanese funnily enough...
Anyone got any other suggestions for saddest/most depressing film of all time? |

The Magdalene Sisters was pretty depressing. About the only film I've seen where people were openly crying in the cinema. |

Movies like that based on real events (even if the characters are fictional like the lead couple) are almost always depressing if you know the outcome.
Still a good movie, though my curiousity about it had less to do with the lovy dovy stuff, but more to do with whether they got it technically right heh. Heck, I still don't know if they had with Titanic but it was enjoyable. Plus I guess everyone who saw it wanted to see if Cameron's inflated budget was justfitied...how he pulled everything off etc.
Another recent movie like this that I found equally depressing (though greatly filmed mind you) was Black Hawk Down.
It was terrible only because we knew the outcome and we probably knew things could have gone better in different ways but never materialized. |

I think it's depressing, sad and tragic that Kubrik died and that idiot Spielberg made it. |

I'd say the most depressing movie I've seen is The Virgin Suicides. But by comparison, you'll see a lot more depressing stuff by just looking out your window... Well, in the US anyway |

"Requiem for a Dream" is a *very* depressing movie, it's about some normal people who get deeper an deeper in drug scene. Should also be a movie in schools....
