What a fantastic idea, take an excellent multiplayer-only first person shooter and then add game play elements that move the focus slightly away from just killing each other. In the game you either play Allies or Axis and each level has some kind of objective, other than just slaughtering each other that is.

For example, in one level the Axis are trying to get a train loaded with ammunition so they can take it and fire a huge cannon, the allies will lose the game if they let them do this. In another level the Allies are trying to get a tank into position to blow the doors on a bank and then use a truck to steal some Axis gold, obviously the Axis aren't keen on that idea.

Another change to the normal FPS genre is experience and character roles, you can play medics, heavy weapons specialists, covert operatives, engineers or commanders. Switching roles is discouraged because you lose all the benefits of your increasing experience score (extra health, ammo, weapons, speed, etc). A number of levels (usually 6) will be linked into a series and the xp will rise as you play them (resetting when you reach the end).

Definitely a fantastic step forward for the FPS and great fun, but there is a big problem. The game is free. What? How is that a problem? Well it means there is little/no further work done on the game and a number of different exploits and map problems have emerged which are probably never going to get fixed.

The real killer is that there is no method of filtering the people you are playing with, experience is not recorded between games (again because there is no money coming in to pay for centralised servers or game updates presumably). So most of the time you will join a server where the players have a wildly different level of skill than yourself which makes the game VERY dull. You will either be killed before you have taken two steps by a team of uber players or be in the opposite role facing a team of total noobs. Either way round it really isn't fun.

If you persevere and search through the servers you can have a fantastic gaming experience if you can find the right group of players. The game also supports player modded levels but the complexity of the game and lack of official support is slowing them down I think. The ones I tried seemed a bit amateurish but I am sure things will improve. Counter Strike and True Combat are probably more well rounded games, but you have to buy Half Life to play them Smile I would list my in game name but I spend so much time shouting and swearing I better keep it to myself Twisted Evil

IMPORTANT: make sure you read the manual before playing, as I said this is more complicated than your average FPS and you really need to know what is going on or you will be lost.

Haha, yes, I always look forward to playing this game (on my brother's computer, I got the laptop end of the deal and he freaking built one for some arbitrary high school project) and I really like the versatility in the game. Now point and click weapons only comprise half of the arsenal, and brute force won't work. The sheer magic of it is that just sitting there killing people really won't help if nobody's doing anything else; someone has to be the point man. One person knowing what he is doing is worth 20 people continually rushing into the hot spots. The objective based gameplay really breaks up the monotony most FPS games fall into.

I love to be the medic, but for some reason my cheap side always comes up and makes me a better soldier. Yes, I'm the guy that bombs in front of the spawn, starts barbecue parties at crucial choke and visibility points, and generally dispenses 'indiscriminate' justice with the panzerfaust.

In answer to your post, turning on all the filters - including the life limiting one - will most likely get you in a really fair and challenging game. Make sure XP save is not enabled for the servers being played on.

For games of that sort, it helps to have a known team to play with -- say, people you know from a forum or friends from your city. For one thing, you know they're not cheating Smile
