If I buy indie games from a non-Steam source, and get a Steam key thrown in, does the developer have to give Steam money when I use the key?
(I'm thinking specifically of Humble Indie Bundle games, but it applies elsewhere, too.) |

| There's no guarantee it will always work the same, but as far as I know Steam keys are given to developers for free. I think the idea is Steam want to recruit new members so it's in their interest to do it, but they don't want to go nuts with it as then you might start to think you don't have to buy something through Steam. So not everyone gets an unlimited supply. |

| Ta. In which case I'll go ahead and tie stuff into my steam account for convenience and shiny achievements. (Because I'm shallow and like to have lots of little icons showing what I wasted my time doing. How ever did we cope before achievements?) |
