I know statistics can be manipulated to prove anything, but this one makes alarming reading. Is it true?

| Yes, it's true. And actually, things are worse than that. Partly because of the appalling bias in the system ("minorities" are about 30% of the US population, and also account for about 30% of drug reports made by the police - and 50% of drug-related arrests, and 70% of drug-related prison sentences), but also because of the scary way the system is set up. US privately run prisons use the prisoners, basically, as slave labour to enrich their owners. Plus they get a nice annual sum from the government! So there's a powerful lobby to increase the size of the prison population, because every extra prisoner means extra money for the bosses and shareholders.... |
