|
|
So, the assignments I need to do for my TAFE class involve making games (yes, from scratch, and, since I choose so, by myself), and I need sound. I'm also nuts about my work being all my work (we're allowed to get things from other sources, as long as the source allows it and it's properly attributed, but I want what I create to show what I can create, not how I can work with something else). A couple of basic sound effects I can probably do (just record me making them into a mic - kinda cheesy but gets the job done).
So, to get to my actual question, I need advice for how I can create music (no I'm not recording myself for that, but I'm only looking to make a short loop) and sound effects (a couple of different ones, but they will be short) with what I have lying around. That's a computer, a couple of microphones (desk and headset), iPod touch and my various gaming equipment (not sure where they'd come in handy but I do have a full complement of Guitar Hero instruments that I can connect to the computer with my 360 controller adapter).
I'm probably going to need software (Audacity is fine for basic edits but it doesn't do that much in the "creation" department, other than recording), but it has to be free or have a demo version which isn't crippled too much. Any advice you can provide or tutorials you could point me in the direction of would be appreciated. As implied by the subject I can't afford to buy anything, software or hardware.
Thanks in advance,
Your magnanimous overlord (oops, working on that part), Konedima |

I asked a friend that is into making music and he said this:
Quote: |
get computer music magazine (Has a dvd with free music programs) and then a loop library that sounds like it's the right genre and glue something together
computer music mag has atricles of how to use the stuff too
you don't need loop library either there are plenty of free soft instruments out there and on that same DVD
it's 7-8 gigs of joy every month, and has free music creation program every month for newbies
fully capable of making pro level music
just add skill
with lack of skill get acid loop disks and glue something together
there are many of these acid loop libraries
another to look at is "Band in a box" it generates music for you
you just input chord progression pick instruments and it just goes
miscrosoft makes "song creator" or something like that does same thing
sorta
so many options of musical morons (Like me)

Your question got me thinking and I was wondering if there was a free midi authoring tool that let you input the midi as notes on a staff (say I have some sheet music I want to convert into midi) and I found NoteEdit which looks interesting. Haven't tried it but I'm currently installing it on my ubuntu box to check it out.
Most of my music creation forays on a computer have been with function generators and scripting engines. Mostly because the dealt with digital signal processing. You could probably do something with the python libraries numpy and scipy by having some kind of input which you filter into your music... |

I buy in music/sfx I'm afraid so not much help, although there are quite a lot of free sfx/music sites on the net. Don't forget to post your creations here! |

For quick and dirty sound effects I tend to use sFXr http://www.drpetter.se/project_sfxr.html you might also want to look at musagi on the same site for attempting to make synth style music. |
