XCom:UFO was a brilliant turn based strategy game for the PC, it also had a familiar story of woe for the developer behind it. They ended up being forced to give the IP rights to the publisher to get a deal signed and get it into the shops. The publisher then went bust and a new publisher picked up the IP at a "buy 1 get 1 free - all you can eat" bankruptcy sale. The new publisher didn't want to work with the developer for whatever reason and they were out.
They went quiet for a while and then resurfaced with Laser Squad Nemesis being sold directly off their own site. The familiar turn based battle system from XCom stripped down to its essence played online kind of like chess. One player makes his move, uploads it to the server, some time later the other guy downloads that move, makes his own, etc. An interesting way to play if you don't have a lot of time spare or each person gets online at unpredictable times.

Still not owning the IP they've had another go at working with a publisher, this time on GBA. The game looks like UFO but the names have been changed to protect the innocent from the evil machinations of lawyers.

i hope they dont get screwed like they always seem to. am gonna go and get this pretty soon so ill let you know what its like. there are a few people i always look to see what they are doing. people said there will never be rock stars of the games industry but i have mine-->
*peter molynyeux --> yep he made some completely unplayable games but he does games that i find interesting and i always want to see what he will try next.
*the xcom team --> they made xcom so i stop there
*chris crawford --> only game designer i always agreed with everything he said.
*chris taylor --> ta man!
*richard garriot --> i have high hopes for his next mmorpg. ultima still poops on many of the new rpgs in feauturs if nor grphic engine.
*the moonpod team --> i really believe you will get there. you know, because starscape had that really special thing, all the board regulars here know exactly what am talking about even if its hard to explain. bsides i saw that photo set of a week in your life and it looks like you live like rock stars already! |

It's not quite a handheld UFO/X-Com, as it lacks the research, geoscape and random map bits of the original. There's nothing but story inbetween the linear missions, in fact. It is, however, a very good game, with a battle system that's going to be familiar to anybody who played X-Com (I never played the original Rebelstar on the Speccy, so I don't know how close it is to that). For my money, it's a much better game than Lasersquad Nemesis, which I never really got on with.
At $20, it's well worth the cash. I got it last week and the only thing that's keeping me from playing it more is that I'm holding out until my GB Micro turns up on Monday, rather than playing it on the nasty SP screen (or on the stupidly-large-for-GBA-games DS). |

just got hold of this but i dont have anything to add other than to second all james s comments.
its not xcom but its good fun and i prefer the look over laser squad nemesis. i never liked the shoddy lookin 3d characters in lsn.
now i need to get one of the gba sps that have a bright screen that were announced today |
